Australian opal is considered some of the finest opal in the world. The Australian Boulder opal is only found in Australia within the state of Queensland. Here the opal is mined from deposits of weathered sedimentary Cretaceous rocks in the west of the state along the area known as the Winton Formation. Australian Boulder Opals are created when opals fill cracks and crevices in ironstone boulders, when the opal is mined the ironstone is left apart of the gemstone. The ironstone provides the opal with stability and extra strength as well as a dark backing which creates a stunning visual effect.
The 7.80 carat Australian Boulder Opal we have chosen for the center piece of our necklace is a testament to the beauty of this unique variety of opal. The stunning sky blue opal is sandwiched by dark ironstone on both sides, providing contrast to further elevate the luscious vibrant color and fire of the opal. The composition of the gemstone’s colors almost creates the appearance of a roaring river cutting through the landscape. Accenting the elegance of the opal is a halo of round brilliant cut diamonds with a total diamond weight of .50 carats. The gemstones are carefully set in 18K white gold and the necklace was proudly made in the USA.
